WALNUT — For three quarters of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 girls water polo championship match Saturday, Sunny Hills matched Alta Loma goal for goal.
Sunny Hills’ slow start in the opening quarter, however, wound up being the difference, as the Braves came away with an 11-8 victory over the Lancers to win the Division 2 title at Mt San Antonio College.
The Lancers (25-6) were making their second consecutive appearance in a CIF-SS final. They lost to JSerra 13-5 in the Division 3 final last year.
The Lancers’ season will continue in the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs that begin Tuesday.
“We played courageously, so I was happy with that,” Sunny Hills coach Keith Nighswonger said. “I was happy with the effort.”
Hannah Reekstin scored the first of her four goals on a penalty shot to give Sunny Hills a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the match.
But then Alta Loma (21-9), which won the CIF-SS Division 4 title last year, scored four consecutive goals, including three in a row from Carly Berzins, to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Lancers stayed close to Alta Loma with both teams scoring twice in the second quarter.
Alta Loma led 6-3 at the half, but then the Lancers opened up fast in the third, getting one goal each from Lauren Jacobsen and Reekstin within 15 seconds, and suddenly the Lancers were within a goal.
The Lancers then then missed three shots on consecutive possessions and Angelia Cinquemani scored on a power play to give Alta Loma an 8-5 lead with 59 seconds left in the third.
Sunny Hills’ Mia Hernandez scored from eight meters out, throwing the ball through traffic and into the goal, keeping the Lancers to within two heading into the fourth.
The Lancers got off shots on nearly every possession in the fourth, but their only goal came from Reekstin, who scored with under three minutes remaining.
“Hannah has been a solid player all year,” Nighswonger said. ‘It’s really nice to see her explode like that in the big game.”
Alta Loma coach Kristin Rodriguez praised the Lancers for continuing to attack and keep the contest close.
“We knew what we were in for,” Rodriguez said. “I knew they were fast. I knew they moved a ton. I knew they had talented shooters and their goalie is strong.”
